We recently returned from a transformative visit to SOMACAN, Morocco’s pioneering company at the forefront of legal cannabis cultivation under Law No. 13/21. What we witnessed was not just impressive agriculture — it was the unfolding of a national strategy rooted in sustainability, heritage, and opportunity.

At the heart of this revolution are vibrant greenhouses filled with thriving cannabis plants ready for transplanting. Grown under the sun, in living soil, and in full compliance with national regulations, these plants embody the authentic Moroccan spirit — a blend of tradition and innovation.

Community-Driven, Legally Grounded

SOMACAN collaborates with 12 agricultural cooperatives across Taounate, Al Hoceima, and Chefchaouen, encompassing over 150 hectares. This initiative supports:

• Local employment and income

• Cultural preservation, especially of Morocco’s renowned Beldiya landrace

• Environmental responsibility through organic, open-field cultivation

Rather than replicate the chemically dependent, energy-intensive indoor models dominant in today’s market, SOMACAN leads with a regenerative, people-first approach — and the results speak for themselves.

From the Field to the Lab: Scaling with Integrity

SOMACAN is expanding its operations with dedicated factories:

• In Taounate, focused on cosmetic applications

• In Fes, dedicated to medical-grade cannabis processing

This vertical integration ensures full traceability, alignment with global quality standards, and readiness for international export markets. It's a bold step for Morocco — and a benchmark for the future of the industry.
